HotelsCombined insists it will not screen scrape for its new Ryanair deal

Not the best of starts for Ryanair and new accommodation white label provider HotelsCombined, with the metasearch site moving quickly to clarify comments by Michael O’Leary.

The partnership was first noticed, but only officially announced yesterday, when Ryanair unveiled Isango as its new white label provider for tours and activities, with previous accommodation provider Booking.com disappearing from the site in favour of HotelsCombined.

With remarkable coincidence, Booking.com emerged just a few days later as the new accommodation provider for rival carrier EasyJet.

At a press conference in London this week to unveil the new RyanairHotels microsite, Ryanair CEO O’Leary was reported to have said HotelsCombined will use “screen-scraping methods” to obtain hotel inventory and prices.

While this may appear slightly ironic to many given Ryanair has spent the best part of the past few years trying to crack down on metasearch sites scraping its own fares and availability, including the launch of a CAPTCHA system to try and halt the practice, officials and the main man himself are perhaps just a little bit confused on the finer points of screen-scraping.

HotelsCombined director of business development Yury Glikin insists the metasearch engine does not scrape any hotel websites or online travel agencies to get the deals it will be providing to Ryanair.

“We do not do any scraping, all XML,” he says via email. “Not sure why that comment is there, we definitely do not scrape.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be beyond O’Leary and his canny PR team to be simply using the moment to raise the wider issue of screen scraping again – but by inadvertently or otherwise (falsely) singling out its new partner as a screen-scraper.

HotelClub Making Progress on "Turnaround" Says Harford

Orbitz CEO Barney Harford said his company is seeing better results from HotelClub, its under-performing Asia Pacific accommodation website. "We're feeling great about the progress of the HotelClub turnaround and are seeing promising growth," he said.

But Mr Harford declined to back up his comments with figures. "We've made a decision – we're not going to break out room night growth rates on a brand by brand basis.

"But what I would point to is the fact that we saw acceleration and good growth across all of our businesses in the portfolio. So I think we're feeling great about the trends across the business including at HotelClub, (which has) a significant strategic focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

"I think one of the things that's most important about HotelClub is the loyalty offering that we have there. We're finding that program to be extremely successful."

HotelClub has been struggling for a number of years and had its value written down by $US50 million to zero in the 2011 Orbitz full year results. It runs three websites: HotelClub.com, RatesToGo.com and AsiaHotels.com.

Meanwhile, Michael O. Randolfi, Chief Financial Officer at Orbitz, said in the first quarter "net revenue grew 7% year-over-year to UIS$202.9 million and adjusted EBITDA came in at $21.6 million, up 5% from the first quarter last year."

He said the results was better than expected, "driven by significantly stronger performance than we had expected in the last 6 weeks of the quarter.
